Meditation

With the hectic pace and demands on modern life, many people feel stressed and over worked. It often feels like there is not enough time in the day to get everything done. Our stress and tiredness make us unhappy, impatient, and frustrated. It can even affect our health. We are often so busy we feel there is no time to stop and meditate! But meditation actually gives you more time by making your mind calmer and more focused. Meditation can also help us to understand our own mind. We can learn to transform our mind from negative to positive, from disturbed to peaceful, from unhappy to happy. Overcoming negative minds and cultivating constructive thoughts is the purpose of meditation.

Meditation before and after class is hardly enough time to come to an understanding of your own mind. Meditation before class is a way of temporarily transferring your negatives to another place so you can effectively participate in what your instructor has to offer. At the end of every class we meditate because we have to bring the negative back in order to formulate a plan to deal with it. Meditation in the martial arts is just another tool. In order for meditation to be effective in your life, you should incorporate it into your daily activities. If one would spend 5-15 minutes in meditation daily, they may find that their ability to focus and make decisions would be greater.
